Time flies! I’ve passed 75% of my year Down Under, and have just a few months left here! This month was split into two: road tripping and housesitting. I’ve made it across the southwest coast to Adelaide, and feel so close to finishing my Lap of Australia now.
I break down my expenses into four main categories: accommodation, gas, food, and other. I always detail what I spent in the “other” category in these blog posts – typically miscellaneous travel costs.
How Much I Spent in Month 9 in Australia
So, how much money did I actually spend this month? Here’s my budget breakdown!
Accommodation: $108 = £58 // $74 USD
Gas: $986 = £528 // $671 USD
Food: $257 = £138 // $175 USD
Other: $93 = £50 // $63 USD
Total: $1444 = £773 // $983 USD

Australia Budget Analysis
This month was a mix of fast-paced travel and relaxation. I spent the first two weeks road tripping from Geraldton/Perth, to Adelaide. It was a lot of driving – but, thankfully, the last stretch of my long drives in Australia! Gas was very expensive as I crossed the Nullarbor, but hopefully I won’t have to pay extortionate prices for fuel again during my time in Australia. I was grateful to stay with friends in both Perth and Denmark, who put me up and fed me!
I kept my accommodation budget low this month, which I was really pleased with. Although I did have to spend some money at campsites, I had quite a few free camps. I treated myself to a hotel stay in Port Lincoln, as I had a hotel credit through my Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card to use. Since I’ve been in Adelaide, I’ve been housesitting – so I’ve had all the comforts of home, with no cost. Thanks to staying at campsites with camp kitchens and with friends, I was able to use my cooler on the road. And, of course, I had fridges in the housesits. This meant my food budget was mercifully low for the month!
My other expenses this month weren’t very exciting or expensive. I spent some money on random things at Kmart, as per the usual. The Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk was one of the few things I did that required an admission fee ($21 AUD). I bought my two-month South Australia parks pass for $52 AUD, and took the train into Adelaide to explore the city for the day.
Overall, I’m very pleased with my budget for this month. It’s actually the least amount of money I’ve spent in a month since I lived on Great Keppel Island in July! Next month will also be a mixed bag: I’ll spend two weeks housesitting, before hitting the road and driving to Melbourne. I expect my housesitting weeks to be inexpensive, while I’ll obviously spend a lot more once I hit the road. I hope this post gives a realistic idea of how much money it costs to travel Australia!
