Hostel Review: Knight House Hostel, Tallinn

As a travel blogger, I spend a lot of time researching accommodation and recommending good places to stay. I try to give honest reviews of hostels I’ve stayed at over the years on the blog. Reviews are such a huge resource when deciding where to stay on a trip! On my most recent trip to Tallinn, Estonia, I stayed at Knight House Hostel and really enjoyed my stay. Here is my full review!

Location: Knight House’s location is excellent. It’s located in the Old Town, less than a 5-minute walk to the Town Hall Square. All of the city’s Old Town attractions are less than 20 minutes away by foot! The bus station, train station, and ferry terminal are roughly a 20-to-30-minute walk away. It’s also accessible with bus and tram from Freedom Square, a 5-minute walk away. The hostel is tucked away in a small archway on Ruutli street.

Room: I stayed in a 6-bed dorm room for my 4 nights in Tallinn at Knight House. The room was spacious, and had two single beds and two bunk beds—if only I’d been lucky enough to snag a single bed! There were good-sized lockers, some with built-in locks. My top bunk bed had a personal basket and reading light, although no plug. I wasn’t able to charge my phone in my bed, but this was still an overall great hostel experience.

Price: I paid 10€ per night, with the price rising to 12€ on the weekend. For the location and amenities it offered, this was an excellent value for money! While Tallinn surely does have cheaper hostel rooms, I really felt like I got my money’s worth (and more) from Knight House Hostel.

Bathrooms: The bathrooms at Knight House were fairly small, but besides that I really have no complaints. Toilets and showers were separate (so you didn’t have to wait on someone in the shower if you needed to pee!) and cleaned regularly. They also have several different toilets/showers across the floors—I never waited for either bathroom, ever.

Staff: All the staff I encountered at Knight House Hostel were really great. Even though we were arriving very late and checking in after the official reception hours, a staff member waited around to check us in. As a female traveler who frequently travels solo, it is really important to me to have someone waiting on me to show up—so if I don’t, they know something’s wrong. It was a small gesture, but it really meant a lot! All the other staff were helpful when I needed loads of stuff printing, and offering recommendations and advice. And they made delicious pancakes in the morning! (More below!)

Common Areas: There are a few common areas in Knight House, although the hostel isn’t huge. There’s a cozy common area with a big TV. There’s also a really nice, fully-equipped kitchen, and a small balcony for smoking/relaxing with a drink. While the hostel has lots of private rooms for families and couples, there is generally a typical backpackers feel to the hostel in the dorms, and I feel like it would have been easy to meet people if I was traveling solo.

Amenities: The amenities were really what set Knight House Hostel apart from a lot of other places I’ve stayed. The free breakfast ran from 8:00-11:00am, with pancakes at certain times as well! The pancakes were delicious and definitely a huge bonus to staying here. The wifi worked well in all areas throughout the hostel. The final touch was the earplugs and chocolate truffle on each bed as a welcome gift. This was the first time I’d ever had chocolate on my pillow at a hostel and it definitely made me wish all places did this!! I didn’t have any problem printing my boarding passes and bus tickets, which was nice. They can organize events and tours, and have information on backpackers events in town every night!

Security: Knight House Hostel was located in a safe area, in the Old Town. Security was good here, with separate keys for the front door and individual rooms. They also have keycode security to get into the hostel. Some of the lockers had built-in locks, some required your own lock. While reception isn’t manned overnight, it tends to be pretty quiet and chill in the late nights. Overall, I felt safe here and have no complaints.

Verdict: Would I return? Yes. I’d definitely recommend Knight House Hostel for anyone visiting Tallinn. Between the location, the price, the pancakes, and the pillow chocolates, I really enjoyed my stay here.
